Teachwise came to us with an ambitious business idea - it wanted to create an online marketplace where educators could create their own stores to sell curriculums, projects and similar ideas to their peers. The goal was to create a peer-to-peer marketplace that would enable educators to access high-quality materials and share ideas with one another in intuitive ways. Big ideas come with major challenges, and one of them was that there wasn't a web platform to meet those specific needs at the time. We were able to step in and help Teachwise get its creative store idea up and running, and the relationship continued as we added a number of more nuanced features over the second phase of the project.

We started with Magento Enterprise Edition when working with Teachwise. Magento, usually a prototypical platform for business-to-business or business-to-consumer sales, needed to be heavily customized to establish this varied store model that Teachwise envisioned. We were able to turn Magento into a location where users can actually create and customize their own stores within preset parameters, giving them the backend excellence offered by Magento within a frontend design that offers varied possibilities for each store owner. Teachers selling goods had an opportunity to provide a bit of their background, and the site organizes products and shops based on those details to create a simple, accessible end-user experience.

With the main site in place, we worked to refine the setup in the second phase of the project. We integrated Bronto, Solr Search, PayPal and Pinterest functionality into the site. We also developed heavy customizations to the home page that allows the site to highlight different types of stores and sellers, enable customers to file and share stores, and even enable users to chat about various stores available on the site. Owners gain a degree of visibility into all of this through dashboards that provide reporting into how their stores perform on the site and what factors contribute to those results.

A robust payment system rounded out these efforts. The Teachwise site processes payments, takes its small share of the price and then pays out to the various stores based on their membership status - some stores are paid monthly and others bi-weekly. Our PayPal integration allowed Teachwise to easily batch payments in the backend to meet the needs of different user groups.

Even the most ambitious website ideas can be brought to fruition with the right combination of collaboration and development effort. Our work with Teachwise highlights the way good web design and development partnership can allow organizations to break down barriers that may limit their business and find success.
