7 Key Magento 2 SEO Improvements – An Overview

Posted by Kuldeep Singh

Magento has already provided great SEO features when it comes to SEO for ecommerce websites. Magento by default is loaded with basic (and some advanced) SEO features which are very easy to configure and update.

Along with Magento 1’s default SEO configurations, there are some key improvements in the recently released Magento 2:

1. The option to preserve the same URL format for category pages when filtering options are used, which was not available in Magento 1. This will help keep the same URL while updating any filter or sorting options for category pages.

2. XML Sitemap Improvements – Some new features have been added in Magento 2:

  • Now it is possible to set priority and frequency for each page type like products, categories, and CMS pages.
  • In Magento 2, the XML sitemap can be automatically added to the robots.txt file.

3. Rich Snippets has been one of the major improvements in the Magento 2 SEO features. Now it is possible to add rich-snippets in the Magento 2 default installation, without using any third-party extensions. With this improvement it is now possible to use structured data for product pages and get better visibility in SERP (search engine result page) for major search engines like Google.

4. Robots.txt – In Magento 2 it is possible to edit the Robots.txt file right in the admin’s section under Stores > General > Design

5. Schema.org has been added to Magento 2’s default template.

6. Along with Google Analytics tracking, ecommerce tracking, and AdWords – now Google Tag Manager can be added to the Magento 2 Enterprise Edition.

7. Now it’s easy to add Product Labels without any third-party extension.

These SEO functionality improvements for Magento 2 make it better to optimize an ecommerce website for search engine rankings.
